As bad weather arrived, Broward County announced it wants all drivers off the road by 1 p.m.

Public schools already had announced closures for Thursday and Friday, and most government and court operations did so as well.

Long before strong winds were expected, 890 customers in Broward were without power, according to Florida Power & Light’s noon update on its website.

As Hurricane Matthew grows closer to South Florida, officials closed Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, locked down bridges, and closed roads. Palm Beach County ordered mandatory evacuations.

And power outages left more than 10,000 customers without electricity as the storm began to graze South Florida.

Public schools already had announced closures for Thursday and Friday, and most government and court operations did so as well.
